This fall, PBS released a stunning three-part series: The U.S. and the Holocaust. Co-directed by Sarah Botstein ’94, the series sheds light on what the U.S government and Americans knew and did —and did not do—as Hitler rose to power. Join the Kraft Center, the Athena Center for Leadership at Barnard, and the Office of DEI at Barnard for a screening of a portion of the documentary and a conversation with Botstein and other special guests.

SPARK is a series of provocations and conversations designed to ignite your thinking about change and how it happens. Through interviews, book talks, field trips, film screenings, and more, you'll get to know the women and nonbinary people leading change in a wide range of areas, and learn more about the hard, but important, work of building a better future. SPARK is open to all members of the Barnard community, including faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends of the college.

About Co-Director Sarah Botstein ’94
Sarah Botstein has for more than two decades produced some of the most popular and
acclaimed documentaries on PBS. Her work with directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick,
includes Hemingway (2020), College Behind Bars (2010), The Vietnam War (2017),
Prohibition (2011), The War (2007) and Jazz (2001).
Botstein is co-directing and producing (with Burns and Novick) a three-part series, The
U.S. and the Holocaust. Set for release in the fall of 2022, the film will be Botstein’s
directorial debut. Currently, she is producing an epic six-part 12- hour series on the
American Revolution and a project on Lyndon Johnson’s life and presidency.
In addition to the television broadcasts, Botstein works on digital and education
initiatives, in collaboration with PBS Learning Media and WETA-TV. She helps to oversee
content for Ken Burns UNUM, a web-based platform and mini series which utilizes
scenes from Florentine Films body of work to highlight historical themes relevant to our
time.
