Barnard Alumnae Email FAQ

Updated July 2023

What is the Barnard Alumnae Email service?

Alumnae will have access to a Google account @alum.barnard.edu, which will include Mail, Calendar, Drive, and other core Google (G Suite) applications. This service will be completely separate from gBear. Any member of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College can have access to Barnard Alumnae Email.

When will my account become available?

Please fill out this form (login required) to request your Barnard Alumnae Email be activated.

Barnard Alumnae Email accounts are created once per week. If you submit your request form by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, your account will be activated by the following Monday.

Will my data (email, etc.) be moved from gBear to @alum.barnard.edu for me?

No; if you wish to retain your data, you will have to migrate anything you wish to keep. Student Computing has a help page with instructions on how to do this. (BCIT recommends taking an archive of your data as described even if you do not want to import it to your alumnae account.)

Is there a storage limit on my Barnard Alumnae Email account?

Yes. Due to new Google storage policies, there is a limit of 15 GB of storage that’s shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. This limit will automatically be applied to all Barnard Alumnae Email accounts starting in December 2022.

You can read about Google storage policies and tips for staying under the limit on the How your Google storage works help page.

How long will my gBear account be available?

May graduates' accounts will be closed the first week of January. Please make sure to migrate your data before that time, as we will not be able to re-open your gBear account once it is closed.

Can I forward my gBear email to alum.barnard.edu?

Only briefly - once your gBear account is closed, any mail sent to your uni@barnard.edu address will bounce back to the sender.

How is my alumnae account set up?

All other alumnae must fill out this form (login required) to request your Barnard Alumnae Email be activated.

How do I log in for the first time?

Go to gmail.com and login as your-uni@alum.barnard.edu - for example, if your UNI is "abc1234", you will type in "abc1234@alum.barnard.edu" for your username - and your initial password will be your 7-digit College ID number+"bc" - so, if your College ID was "1234567", your initial password will be "1234567bc". (You will have to change your password on your first login.)

How can I get help?

Do I have to use my @alum.barnard.edu account?

No, you do not have to use it. However, your account will be suspended after one year without use.
